SIDSEL STORM – AWAKE – CALI146 – 5709498213842 / CALILP006 – 5709498213859

The 36-year-old jazz singer Sidsel Storm is ready with his 5th release in his own name.

She has been very successful on stages in both Japan, Taiwan, Thailand, Germany and Scandinavia and has taken the audience as well as reviewers by storm with her warm personal voice and her unique presence. Now she is ready with new release and concerts in 2019/20.

Sidsel Storm has previously made her marks at home and received prestigious awards such as DPA’s jazz composer award (2008) and a Danish Music Award for “The best  Vocal Jazz Release” (2009). In addition, she has gained international recognition with tens of thousands of sold CDs in, Asia and Germany among other things.

AWAKE is recorded in The Village Studio in Copenhagen and in Sidsel’s own small studio in Dragør. The record is mixed and mastered in Nilento Studio, Gothenburg (SE).

AWAKE contains songs by Sidsel and other together with the Swedish jazz pianist Magnus Hjorth opens up for a new and exciting compositional collaboration. Sidsel and her husband, pianist and producer Peter Storm Otto, have together written the title composition “AWAKE”. A concept they both recognize after the last couple of years with 3 young children. The songs on AWAKE touch on topics such as presence, love, grief, longing, bad habits and gratitude. In addition to her own compositions, Sidsel also interprets some old standards that are treated with a great deal of respect and love.

Sidsel Storm has gathered her regular live team on this record and has also invited a stringtrio on the album. Sidsel feels it is natural to involve the band musicians in both the composition work and the organizer work, as this is often a natural process in the rehearsal room and strengthens the band as a whole and thus the overall expression.

SIDSEL STORM – CLOSER – CALI143 – 5706725101439

Again SIDSEL attains tempestuous heights

She has stood on many stages – here, there and in the outside world – taking audiences and critics by storm with her luscious voice, the cool Nordic sound of her compositions, and her ravishing appearance. The release of the album, Closer, on March 23nd, will be the fourth recording in her own name by this budding singing star and songwriter.

Closer came into being in close teamwork with Peter Storm Otto, who is not only Sidsel Storm’s regular musical collaborator, but also the man in her life – a relationship of dynamic energy that provides space for affection as well as collegial support. It’s no surprise, therefore, that the songs on the new album wrestle with human relationships, sending us down sundry paths in search of love, where the heart can either bubble over or burst.

Sidsel has already drawn attention to herself both at home and abroad. A mere 32 years of age, she has released four albums in her own name, received the Danish Songwriters Guild Prize (2008) and a Danish Music Award for ‘Danish Jazz Vocal Release of the Year’ (2009), as well as a good deal of international recognition. She has sold tens of thousands of albums in Asia and Germany, where she is particularly popular.

In the meantime this compelling woman has also become a mother, though it has only kept her off the stage for a month, once again revealing her as an ambitious musical talent. Nor does Sidsel leave anything to chance when it comes to this other apple of her eye: the music. She plays a central role in all the processes involved in an album’s creation, from composing the numbers and writing the lyrics, releasing the album, booking and press photos, to forming the music both in the studio and on stage.

Sidsel Storm is a singer who knows what she wants. A person paging through the logbook for Closer with its elaborate details about each number would be tempted to believe the release was a pop-music production, considering the minimum of space left for improvisation, a characteristic feature of jazz. She spent long hours working on the compositions until she was satisfied, before spending months in the studio recording this new album.

A thoughtful Storm

Sidsel began receiving musical inspiration at a very early age, and her success today as a vocalist is a childhood dream come true. Her husband, Peter Storm Otto, is also devoted to music. It was he who originally introduced her to jazz, with which she has since fallen passionately in love.

But there are other sources of musical inspiration as well. Besides her career as a musician and a Bachelor’s Degree in musicology, the ambitious singer has also been inspired by her study of psychology.

The lyrics of Closer deal with human relationships and with the darker aspects of life. Sidsel leads us through all of life’s facets that deal with love – love of a partner, a friend, an acquaintance. The words strike the listener as being serious, profound, and sometimes melancholic. They reveal a singer who reflects about being alive, about the world and the people who inhabit it.

Still, Sidsel leaves the listener with a kind of optimism. For when she sings in her clear, feminine voice, Holding her dream although it seems all hope is gone, She’s moving on and Places we went, and laughter we spent, Possibilities were endless then, the album reveals a singer who has hope, who sees brighter times ahead.

The numbers on Closer are a blend of original compositions and standards, mixed and mastered by Norwegian Jan Erik Kongshaug, who also mixes releases for the ECM label and has worked with names like Keith Jarrett, Chick Corea, Pat Metheny – and now also Denmark’s Sidsel Storm.

Songs from the heart

Sidsel Storm’s album Nothing In Between remains true to the modern, airy vocal jazz for which she is known, presenting the listener once again with an ear catching, whimsical expression and vocal style combining the best of jazz and pop.

The album’s music and lyrics are composed by Storm herself, in cooperation with her husband, songwriter/producer Peter Otto.  Together they have created an emotive, lyrical universe in which Storm, who gave birth to a son in October 2010, beckons the listener into her deepest feelings and thoughts.

”This is my most personal album so far.  The lyrics deal with everything from life to death and have helped me tackle what at times have been difficult periods in my life.  At the same time, the album also draws a picture of the beauty of life.  Among other things, the songs are about both loss and about receiving life’s biggest gift of all.”

This long awaited release sees Sidsel Storm gather an abitious group of recognised musical talents from the Nordic jazz scene.  It consists, among others, of pianist Magnus Hjorth, drummer Snorre Kirk, bassist Jesper Thorn and Tobias Wiklund on trumpet and flugelhorn.  They have performed live together over many years, both in Denmark and internationally, a close collaboration that shines through on the album.

From Copenhagen to Tokyo

Despite her youth, Sidsel Storm is already sought after in the international music scene, where critics praise her ability to capture audiences with her warmth, engaging melodies and powerful voice.  In increasing demand since the release of her debut album ‘Sidsel Storm’ in 2008 and ‘Swedish Lullaby’ in 2010, Storm has, among other things, appeared on the cover of the Japanese jazz magasine Jazz Perspective and performed to full houses in USA, Germany, Thailand and Sweden and most recently at the mini-festival ‘Le Jazz Danois’ in Paris, where an enthusiastic audience met The Sidsel Storm Quintet with a standing ovation.  Success brings with it obligation, and life continues in full swing for Sidsel Storm, who from her base in Copenhagen is planning a longer Danish and international tour in conjunction with the release of the new album.

Her new album will be released in Germany April 5th 2013 through O-Tone Music/Codaex and there is a tour lined up in Germany in April as well.
