SNORRE KIRK – EUROPA – CALI144 – 5706725101446

Snorre Kirk – Europa

After skyrocketing onto the European Jazz Scene as a sideman with some of the finest names on the Scandinavian jazz scene today, as well as working with prominent international names such as Diane Schuur, Eric Reed and Stephen Riley, recent years have seen inter-scandinavian drummer Snorre Kirk come into his own as a full-fledged artist and composer in his own right.

On Blues Modernism, the hugely successful 2012 debut outing from Snorre Kirk, that was subsequently awarded with the prestigious JazzSpecial Award in Denmark for ”Album of the Year”, as well as receiving two nominations in the Danish Music Awards, the drummer got to showcase his qualities as a composer and bandleader.

Featuring a stellar cast of contemporary Scandinavian jazz greats, this mellow and soulful album proved to be a downright antithesis of the often dreaded drummer-asbandleader format, and showed Snorre Kirk to be not only an accomplished drummer, but a highly original composer and artist as well, and was received well by the critics, with recurrent references being made to both Duke Ellington and Charles Mingus.

From sultry ballads to down home grooves, to church music and beyond, all heavily drenched in the comforting sound and familiar warmth of the blues, this is indeed a modern album for modern times.

Spring 2015 sees the long-awaited release of Snorre Kirk’s sophomore album, the aptly entitled Europa, certain to further cement his position as one of Europe’s fastest rising jazz stars.

Line-up:
Tobias Wiklund – cornet
Jan Harbeck – tenor saxophone

Lasse Mørck – bass

SNORRE KIRK – BLUES MODERNISM – CALI119 – 5706725101194

New CD entitled Blues Modernism ready for release!

Barely having finished his studies at the Conservatory in Copenhagen, where he recently completed a
Master degree in music, young drummer Snorre Kirk has skyrocketed into the European jazz scene, playing
with some of the most prominent young talents from Scandinavia.
Whether it is mainstream jazz with artists such as Magnus Hjorth or danish tenor royalty Jesper Thilo,
blistering hardbop with alto ace Fredrik Kronkvist, fusion with violinist Mads Tolling, contemporary vocal jazz with Sidsel Storm and Malene Mortensen, or even cutting edge avant-garde music with trumpeter
Mads la Cour, Snorre Kirk seems to have all bases covered, a requirement and true sign of a 21st century
jazz drummer.

On “Blues Modernism”, out this winter on Calibrated Music, Snorre Kirk also gets to showcase his qualities
as a composer and bandleader. Featuring a stellar cast of contemporary Scandinavian jazz greats, this
mellow and soulful album is the downright antithesis of the often dreaded drummer-as-bandleader format,
and shows Snorre Kirk to be an accomplished and highly original composer and artist as well.
As indicated by its title, this album is testament to the unquavering and timeless qualities found in the
blues, its ability to portray the full range of human emotion still unsurpassed in the year 2011. From sultry
ballads to southern grooves, to church music and beyond, all drenched in the comforting sound of the
blues, this is a truly modern album for modern times.

“I am privileged to be aware of Snorre Kirk, his music, and the fine musicians on this record. Any listener will
have a fun time listening to this record and will enjoy it for years to come.” -Jason Marsalis
